Do you want to live life on your terms? Start making your decisions faster!
In this article I’ll explain:
- Why we need to make decisions fast;
- Why we procrastinate on making decisions;
- How (growth based) binary thinking helps us make decisions faster.
Until my early 20’s I procrastinated on making decisions big time. I often overthought the different options before I decided to choose something. Choosing if I should do a master program, to find a job, or become an entrepreneur? which city to live? To stay in relationships or not? I always wanted to make the ‘perfect’ decision but ended up procrastinating and sometimes not deciding at all.
I remember I would look up the website of different master programs maybe 50 times. Reading and researching everything. Looking at the costs I would make, the job opportunities it would give. Crazy. I procrastinated and ended up working at a corporate for almost 2 years. While I just could have said chosen faster overthinking my options 100s of times.
I procrastinated on making decisions on silly like:
- what to wear?
- what to eat?
- what to do on a day off?
Change of mindset
From my mid-twenties I changed my decision-making process. Not necessarily with tools, but by changing my mindset. I adopted a growth mindset and became more self-aware of my strengths and weaknesses. What in return made my whole decisions process binary (black or white). All my decision go through the question does it facilitate growth or not?
Why do we procrastinate on decisions?
Lack of Self Awareness
If we don’t know who we are, what our strength and weakness are, what our passions are, we will not know what we want to get out of our life. If you don’t really know yourself you’ll always be busy thinking what others expect you to do.
Fear of failure
We are afraid of dealing with the consequences of a bad decision. So we overthink things along and often end up not making a decision at all.
We are afraid of making the wrong choice of what to eat when we’re in a restaurant. Because we are afraid of not getting the best experience. Even bigger: we are afraid of choosing the wrong job. Because we are afraid of not living up to expectations set by society.
Fear of rejection
We procrastinate on decisions because we are too much busy with the opinions of other people.
When we take hours to decide what to wear to a party we’re often too concerned about our self-image.
Grow your decisionmaking muscle
Fortunately, we can do something about it. Like someone goes to the gym to build their muscles, we can do the same to build our decision-making muscle. And with a growth-mindset, every decision becomes binary. Thinking binary is black and white. It’s either good or it’s bad. It’s either facilitating growth or it’s not.
What do you need?
A growth mindset
A growth mindset revolves around the belief that you can constantly improve intelligence, ability, and performance. People who adopt a growth mindset believe anyone can be good at anything; that their abilities can be developed through dedication, perseverance, and the right strategy.
On the flipside, Individuals who adopt a fixed mindset rarely excel at anything. This is because they believe their intelligence and abilities are what they are, they invest their energy in looking smart instead of learning and developing.
In a fixed mindset, if you try something you’ve never done before, say surfing (like I’m trying now) you’ll likely give up after falling a few times.
You need to know your strengths and weaknesses.
You need to design your life in terms of what you want out of your relationships, career, health, and finances.Here is a great article about how to develop self-awareness.
The best part of this is that there are no bad decisions when we adopt this mindset. Every decision goes through the binary question does it facilitate growth? Yes or No? Easy is that! From there every failure is an opportunity for growth.
So start adopting a growth mindset and become more self-aware. By choosing fast(er), you’re setting yourself up for more action what in return will bring you tremendous growth in all areas of life!
